How the Game is Played

The objective of Rugby Union is to score more points than the opposing team. Players can kick, pass and carry the ball to move it up the field. A try which is worth five points, is scored by puting the ball in the opponent's in-goal area. Teams can also score through penalty kicks, conversions and drop goals. Unlike many sports, players can only pass the ball backwards, which forces strategic movement and teamwork. A standard match consists of two 40-minute halves, with the team who scores the most points the winner.

Major Competitions

Rugby Union features several prestigious international competitions. The biggest tournament is the Rugby World Cup which is held every four years, with it featuring the world's top national teams. Other big competitions include the Six Nations Championship in Europe and The Rugby Championship, which involves New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Argentina. At club level, competitions such as the Super Rugby Pacific attract some of the best rugby players in the world and gives very exciting matches.
